VAT stands for ‘Value Added Tax’ and is a type of sales tax applied to goods or services. VAT, which is also referred to as HST (Harmonized Sales Tax), can be charged at different rates depending on the good or service. The amount of VAT collected by the seller must equal the amount that they pay out to HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) less any input tax credit claimable.

How to calculate Dutch VAT

VAT is added to goods or services with a rate of 21% in the Netherlands.

To calculate the VAT amount, multiply the good/service price by 1.21 and then subtract € 375. This means that for any good priced at € 100, you will pay € 121 (€ 100 * 1.21 = € 121). For any service priced at € 100 per hour, you will pay € 141 per hour (€ 100 * 1.21 = € 121).

FAQs about the Dutch VAT Calculator Netherlands

Why is a tax exemption form required when importing a vehicle from the Netherlands to my country? Your country might have VAT import duty rules that give exclusions for used cars in transit, but all imported goods must undergo taxation in the destination country. Thus your local customs office will need you to submit a form proving your car was exported within 6 months before its entry into the country so they can waive any duties and value-added taxes, which otherwise would have been imposed by your government.
